The smart ammunition can be even more dangerous than people imagine

Guided bullets and smart guns, what next?

Even the smallest weapons like .50 caliber and smaller weapons can have smart or homing ammunition. That kind of ammunition can be even more dangerous than people expected. If we are thinking that the power of microcomputers is increased the most modern small-caliber ammunition can probably already hit to target by using the image-matching technology.

The target has been photographed by using the camera, and then the data would transfer to the computer, which is controlling the flight of the projectile. When the seeker notices the target, that would launch the ammunition. The system can use the smart rifle, or it can use the internal ignition system of the ammunition, which makes it possible to use the cartridge with a normal system.

The ammunition would need only the distance to the target, and the angle where the target is located, that the guidance system of the bullet can turn the bullet, and of course that system can also need the image, what is stored in the memory of the control system and the seeker at the front of the ammunition sees if the target is matching with the image. The image can be taken by using every kind of camera, and that thing makes this kind of cartridge very dangerous.

But there is the possibility to increase the danger of the small ammunition by using smart technology. One of the versions of the smart projectiles is the ammunition, what are recognizing the surface, where they hit. That thing requires a sensor, that can feel the target. When the ammunition would hit the armor it would be straight. And when it starts to travel in tissue, the smart technology can turn the ammunition to the angle, which makes it extremely frightening.

In some scenarios, the smart flechette ammunition would shoot inside the normal-looking bullet. When the distance to the target is suitable the internal explosion of the bullet releases flechette.

In that kind of system the sub-ammunition increases its range, and if the program of the microchip is complicated enough, that thing allows the ammunition to make the decision, does it use itself as hollow or small-size HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) ammunition or does it release flechette at some point of the trajectory.

There might be an articulation in the sub-ammunition that is controlled by a miniature computer inside the flechette ammunition. When the flechette hits armor it would be straight. But when the small arrow is in the human body, the intelligent technology would turn the flechette to the angle, which is increasing the injuries. The rifle and pistol cartridges can equip with small-size HEAT warheads. But the new technology would make those systems more lethal than ever before.

In some visions, the rifle shoots the other gun to the journey. And that kind of military technology can make the areas, where those weapons are used more dangerous than ever before. If that technology goes to the wrong hands, that will make the streets a very dangerous place.
